Newsletter October 2008

The Finger Lakes Section of PPSNYS, Inc. will hold it's monthly meeting on Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at Nonna's Trattoria in Geneva, NY. The business meeting will begin at 2:00pm and we will be announcing the slate of officers for 2009-2010. Our program will start at 3:00pm. Dinner will follow the program. Please plan to stay and support your group!

About our Speakers!

Theo and Lisa Wheeler publishers of Syracuse Wedding, Rochester Wedding and Buffalo Wedding Magazines began in Syracuse New York in 1997 as franchisees of The Perfect Wedding Guide, Inc. Their expansion in Rochester was in early 1999 and Buffalo followed in 2001. The birth of A Perfect Bridal Show Company was in 2002 and currently is Upstate and Western New York's largest bridal show producer, producing 15-17 fabulous shows each year.

In October 2005, the Wheelers dropped the franchise name and officially began publishing the great magazines and websites known today...

  • Syracuse Wedding Magazine & SyracuseWedding.com
  • Rochester Wedding Magazine & RochesterWedding.com
  • Buffalo Wedding Magazine & BuffaloWedding.com

The transition to independent magazines and websites allowed the Wheelers to explore and expand their magazines and websites to new heights, during a time of explosive technological advances in both the print and internet industries. The transition also proved beneficial to their clients by bringing increased visibility and astronomical web traffic to their sites and ultimately to their clients.

As with any great company, it takes a great team, and Wheeler Communications is no exception! "We have been blessed in so many ways by the relationships we have established and continue to create." says Theo Wheeler.

The Wheeler's passion is to continue to serve local brides and businesses as the areas number one wedding resource!

A note from Dan Runfola, 1st VP, Program Chair

Hi all,
I have listened to Theo speak several times and I am impressed to his marketing/advertisement/ and networking ideas. He has volunteered to speak to us at this months meeting. I really think that he has ideas that will work for everyone. Hope to see you all there.
Dan

Message from the Editor

Is Your Business Recession Proof?

With the economy taking a turn for the worse, we all have to take a close look at our businesses and make the necessary adjustments to stay on top of the game. The question i ask myself often is, "Am I doing what it takes to set myself apart?" I am not just referring to my competition, but to non-photography related businesses as well. Does my businesses stand out from the crowd on Main Street? Does my business stand out in terms of customer service? I ask myself these questions to position myself as a pillar in the community. That way, when times are tough and photography seems like a luxury, those people that do need it see my business as the one to go to.

What can you do to set yourself apart? With conference season approaching fast, set a goal to go to Vegas or Phoenix and especially the state conference in Albany. Get on the new state wide forum and participate. Learn from your some of your piers and teach others. Embrace new technologies, your clients are. Most important, have fun. When your clients see your enthusiasm and passion for your business, it builds trust.

Membership News

"If everyone took the time to personally invite one member..."
Its the obligation of everyone in the organization to work on membership!

-Herb Jones, Membership Chairperson

Minutes of the September 2008 Meeting:

PPSNYS Minutes for September 17th, 2008

Attendance: Nancy & Dan Runfola, Paul Freeman, Craig & Linda Hutchings, Lois Miller, Lyn & Vince Aiosa, Steve Schwarz, Bonnie Saunders, Kevin Carlson, Honey DeLapa, Bruce Dart, Karl Joyce and Guest Dan Denney from Trumansburg (Dan Denny Photo)

Treasurer's Report was read and approved.

Old Business:

TEP Committee: Kevin & Honey recommended Saturday February 21st which those present thought would be fine.
A speaker is still needed and several names were brought up and will be contacted.

New Business:

Craig Hutchings discussed the party for his incoming Presidency of PPSNYS at the convention next year. He recommended that we set a dollar amount Roger Koss from TopFlight is willing to donate toward the party as well. Management of the hotel for the convention has changed and policies regarding food provided in the past may have changed as well. The board will meet at the hotel in January and can learn the new policies regarding food provided or not provided at that time. Craig recommended that we set a dollar amount to be discussed after the board meeting in January. This was put to a motion and passed.

Blair Rodabaugh Scholarship: Jean Rodabaugh wants to have someone take over for her regarding the Vangard account. Currently Neil Sojblom is the co-signer for the account. Vince Aiosa is willing to take it over and keep track of account transactions. **** NOTE: $100 SCHOLARSHIP IS AVAILABLE TO MEMBERS OF FINGER LAKES PPSNYS TOWARD WORKSHOP**** (FEATURE THIS SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE!)

Honey DeLapa said she's been identifying herself as a Membership Coordinator, as Herb Jones is the Membership Chairman. Honey is the one sending out membership information and is very interested in attracting more members into our section. Honey has found that current contacts are mostly part-time photographers who have jobs. As a result of their jobs they are unable to attend afternoon meetings. Honey suggested we consider changing to evening meeting times. Discussion was held.

Craig Hutchings made a motion to change to evening meetings with business meetings to begin at 5pm, dinner at 5:30 pm and program to begin at 7pm beginning in January 2009. Motion was passed.

Nominating Committee needs nominations so please send them on to Honey DeLapa or any member of the nominating committee.

Prospective member Dan Denney from Trumansburg was introduced.

Vince Aiosa presented a mini program on sports photography & seniors with several samples of his work primarily with montages.

Program by Jim Metz - an overview of workflow.

Respectfully submitted:
Bonnie Saunders
Treasurer

The Casual Portrait
By Steve Bedell

Fam

I'm still editing the files from my Fall Portrait Weekend. (what? You didn't have one!). This is one of the photos from the weekend. This is one of my 'casual' poses. With this family of three, I did the family in two different locations plus shots of mom and dad alone and some of the child alone. After I feel secure that I've got the 'formal' pose wrapped up, I usually tell them to crash together, squeeze together and just plain act goofy. I find I get some of my favorite shots this way, and my clients seem to agree.

In this case, I had done some more traditional poses and then told them to let loose. The key of course is to be in an area where the light is rather flat but still gives you good catch lights. This insures they can have decent light on them whether they look at the camera or at each other. If you try to get too fancy with the light on these you're bound to get too much of the face in shadow when they move.

Think of it like a fashion shoot where you've got umbrellas on both sides and the model can move freely because the light will be fine no matter which way she turns because it's pretty even.

I get some of my favorite shots this way and the clients love them too. It also gives you another selling option. Sometimes they'll buy both the formal and informal pose. What can be better than that?

Dia

An informal photo should have an informal diagram! I love doing these silly ones. Trees form background and block light on left, there is some but not much overhang from the trees over the family, light shoots in from bright sky behind me and slightly to right. I'm acting like idiot, not a stretch, to get attention.

Taken with a Nikon D300, Sigma 50 - 150mm f/2.8 lens, 66mm, 1/200 @ f/4, ISO 400.

Egirl

This is from the same session, different area, same informal feel to it. Note that even though the light is flat, she has nice catch lights in the eyes. (I don't doctor them.) The secret is to really think about your light source. If you just throw someone under a tree but there is no light source 'shooting in', the light will be flat and lifeless.

She is NOT under an overhang but the strongest light is NOT overhead so no raccoon eyes.
