Staying Fresh

As what was undoubtedly my busiest wedding season ever begins to wind down, I find myself testing my creative abilities to avoid falling into a rut. It's very easy to slip into a routine and do the same things over and over. I find the best way to avoid it is by reading the trade magazines we receive each month. I get backed up sometimes and have a nice pile to go through. However, even if all I do is skim through the photos for ideas it helps. I'm not stealing other peoples ideas, I'm just using them for inspiration and as a starting to point to see things from a different perspective.

Sometimes it doesn't hurt to go back to the basics as well. I went to see David Ziser in Buffalo last month. Although it was a sales pitch for his software, it was also a good refresher course on perspective, composition and lighting. If you get a chance, attend our neighboring sections TEP's.

Minutes of the September 2006 Meeting:

Minutes of the September 20, 2006 Finger Lakes section meeting held at A&R Color Labs:

Meeting was opened by First Vice President Vince Aiosa at 2:10.

Present: Nancy & Angelo (Dan) Runfola. Vince & Lyn Aiosa, Mark Griffin, Lea Gnasel, Gene Stalnaker, Steve Chesler, Hank Yasses, Herb Jones, Neil Sjoblom, Honey DeLapa, Lois Miller, Karl Joyce, Jacquie Degnan.

Secretary's Report: June minutes were taken by Bonnie in Neil's absence. July -- no meeting (workshop), August -- no meeting (picnic).

Treasurer's Report: Bonnie absent

Programs:
  • October -- Robert Stone
  • November: Mike Rusinko
  • December -- Holiday social "TBD".

TEP: Honey said that she, Kevin and Craig were planing it. Vince said he would contact Kevin for definite date and location. Mark, Craig and Neil were assigned to the print committee, and Vince -- brochures.

Workshop: Lois announced next summer line up:
  • Don MacGregor
  • Doug Box
  • Brian Barrett
  • Suzette Allen
  • The Simones

Nominating committee announced: Herb, Hank and Honey

Scholarships: Lois conveyed Jean Rodabough's desire to hand over the responsibility of the Blair Rodabough Scholarship Fund to someone more involved in the organization. Lois suggested that we table that request and talk it over at a better attended meeting.

For the Good of the Order: Hank Yasses announced that he was delighted with his experience at the PPSNYS Summer workshop. He said "the food was good, the Instructors excellent and the price was a bargain". Lois announced that PPSNYS Finger Lakes has received a check in the amount of $1,000.00 from the estate of the late Ellis Stratford, a former long time member. It will be put towards workshop scholarships.

Special Announcement: With sadness Jacquie Degnan announced that A&R Color Labs will be closing in December and she will be retiring. She assured us that they will close only after all orders are finished. Jacquie noted some of the changes that have taken place in her 30 years with A&R, which, in it's "hay day" employed 90 people and serviced over one thousand accounts.

Personal Note: Always generous and supportive to PPSNYS, Jackie and A&R have sponsored many many workshop scholarships, donated processing and prints for workshop every year, donated countless gift certificates and bricks of film to help with our fundraising, held open houses, sponsored advertising in our newsletters & journals, hosted section meetings and and sponsored many convention parties. Jacquie was ever present at trade shows, and, at convention theme parties Jacquie's costumes were the best!

On behalf of the members of PPSNYS I would like to express many thanks to Jacquie & Ed, and the staff at A&R for all that they have done for us over the years, and wish them the best as Jacquie ventures into retirement.

Meeting adjourned at 3:00.

Respectfully submitted,

Neil Sjoblom, Secretary.

I do quite a bit of stock shooting while on vacation. My kids love it because they get paid. While in Blue Hill, Maine this summer my son Cameron (who is saving for a bass guitar) wanted to do a stock shoot for me. I asked if he was willing to get up at early and jump in the lake. Although I warned him it would be cold he agreed. Usually on this lake the sunrise is colorful but this morning it was mostly lake smoke. At about 6:30am my husband canoed Cam and our yellow lab out to the float. Stryder is the only Lab I know that doesn't like to jump into the water so I knew he was stuck on the dock. It was a cold morning so for $20 I got six jumps. When I was done Stryder got nervous and jumped off the dock. That I missed!  Portrait!

Sophia Mommy’s Dress Sophia is my granddaughter. Whenever she would visit, she would go to her Mom’s old room and find different dresses and prom gowns that were still hanging in the closet. With great excitement, she would try them all on, look in the mirror, and parade the new looks for everyone to see. I took Sophia (with her Mom’s 1st pageant gown) to the studio and created this image of her. It is timeless because it represents the “dress-up” season of every little girl’s childhood. Canon 20D w/17-85mm ISO 200 125th @ f/8 One light - Photogenic with 4’X8’ Soft Box I added a “noise” texture in Photoshop.

 A Frame Up

Want to sell more frames? Here's a simple idea that will help - include it with the print! Everyone asks anyway 'Is the frame included?' We've been selling a lot of 10x20 Art Strips to our seniors with a simple black frame from The Levin Company. Figure the price you want for the print. Then add the frame price (we take wholesale plus shipping and multiply by 2.5. We usually use at least a 3 multiple, but here you've got 100% sales with no work!) Check with the folks at Levin for more framing ideas, framing should be your second largest income item!

Next months issue will feature a $100 Coupon from LustrColor, don't miss it!

Sincerely, Steve
