Getting Noticed
For the last several months I have been figuring out how to get a lot of mileage out of free publicity. We have recently been featured on Channel 13 in Rochester for our Trash the Dress sessions, as well as having several of those sessions published on an internationally known website on the subject called Trashthedress.com. This past week we are featured as the Photographer of the Week on the website. I have also had an article in the Buffalo News as well as calls from Fox News in New York to do an interview on the trend.
I decided to pursue the free publicity route several months earlier based on the feedback I received from the article that ran in the Daily Messenger on being a member of Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep, which is an infant bereavement photography donation to help parents cope with the loss of a child. I have sent several press releases to the local media which has done very well. The publicity on the Trash the Dress website is what prompted several media outlets to contact me instead of me contacting them. The process seems to be a snowball effect. I will write more as my discovery into the process unfolds. For now, here are a few photos from the session that Channel 13 covered.

Finding The Edge
Everyone in our field of professional photography is looking for that "edge" or "unique-ness" from what other photographers are doing. We all want to be different and stand out in "the crowd". With today's digital technology there are many ways one may decide to use to achieve this goal.
Two of the areas that I feel are of the utmost importance in achieving ones edge, is creative marketing and learning the proper use of today's digital technology with the aspect of proper exposure. There are many ways one may achieve this expertise. Some ways may include, but are not limited to: attending workshops and seminars, reading photographic books and magazines on specific areas of study, studying under a mentoring professional, and joining PP of A and/or a local New York State section (both are highly respected professional groups dedicated to the learning curve of all photographers). Learning the proper use of imaging software, such as Adobe Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, or Corel Painter, for the enhancement of ones images for proper printing, will help set you apart from other photographers who are unfamiliar with these software.
More and more professionals are teaching many ways of marketing in today's very competitive market. Brochures and newsletters are an excellent way of keeping previous clients informed of specials being offered by the studio. Mall exhibits, donating a service or art print to a reputable fundraiser, having a picnic or dinner for the studio's most favorable clients are all marketing that can be used. Remember, service is EVERYTHING, so anything a studio can do to service their clients in a better way brings in more and more money, and helps build loyalty between client and studio.
Listed above are just a few ideas and ways we can use to improve our businesses, our lives, and our bottom line.
Hank Yasses
2nd Vice-President, FLPPSNY
PS. In October I am hosting Darrell Chitty, a master artist from Shreveport, La. that will do a 2-day workshop on Corel Painter (see cards below for details)

December:
Date/time/place to be decided for a social meeting. I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that if they are anything like the last few December gatherings that a great time will be had by all. Get together with friends, socialize, get tips and hints, ask those questions that you don't want to ask in front of the group. Just have a great time. Maybe Craig will even give some Photoshop help at a reduced rate for the holidays. Thanks for the help already.
Minutes of the August 2007 Meeting:
There were no August minutes due to picnic.
