Message from the Editor

With the busy season in full swing, it's all too easy to get caught up in the work flow and become a slave to our businesses. Most of us have become photographers out of the love of taking photos and have built successful businesses around that core reason. When success comes to the point that we are no longer focusing on the love of photography, it's time to step back and reevaluate what's important in your business.

For me the price of success was coming at the expense of my family. My wife works with me which is something we can enjoy together, but to see the disappointment on my kids faces when I can't participate in something because I have a shoot, it becomes difficult. By including my family in my business, I get to reap the benefits of it's success and spend time with them simultaneously. Today I brought my daughter Sarah on a photo shoot with me to photograph Kate Lee in concert at the Eastman House. Sarah shot about 200 or so photos herself. For a 9-year-old she did surprisingly well. The best part of the shoot was the hug I got afterwards with her saying "Thank You for taking me with you."

This weekend I get to take the family to the Thousand Islands for a wedding at Boldt Castle, and the following week, Sue and I will be going to Mexico City for a wedding down there. It's these opportunities to spend time with my family that make my business a success and keep my love of photography alive and well.

Over Coming An Adversity

In the dictionary the definition for adversity is:
1. A condition of hardship or affliction,
2. A misfortune

I know all of us have gone through adversity many more times than we want to admit it. The difference between an average person and an above average person is a very thin line. I tend to hope I am on the above side.

At this point you are thinking "why the is he writing this? Well, I had two dandies this week. First off, our hot water heater blow and that took all the money I was going to send in for the workshop, which really set me off. Then a front tire on the passenger side on my truck "sprouted" a bulge. I was lucky, I was able to get two, and at the size I needed for only $60. I was in a pickle.

However, I had a wedding on Saturday and the balance from the wedding paid for everything. The real "bummer" I will have to wait until next year for the workshop. That I'm not happy about, you see, the workshop is a gift, see I said a gift; it's true you must pay for it, but where can one receive as much education for so little money? The answer is NOWHERE.

So, I can still drive my truck, as the tires have a good 10,000 miles on them, and I can still take a shower, when I need it of course, and that, that's is real "good".

2nd Vice-President, FLPPSNY

Windo Light
By Steve Bedell

SB1

This will be an abbreviated article that I recently did for SHUTTERBUG magazine. The full article is also posted for members of EPhoto Elite, go to www.ephotoelite.com for more information.

The photo above could be called a window light portrait because it uses window light! But this is NOT a good example of how a professional uses indirect light from a window. It's soft light and it creates good catchlights, but we can do much better.

Now we've used the light to create depth and dimension to the face by using it from our right. The background is close to the window so it also receives the same amount of light.

In this instance, I've added lights. Much like in the studio, I've used a big Larson Super Silver Reflectasol to the left to act as an accent/hair light and I've added a small silver reflector from underneath and the same side as the main light to fill the eyes and give a bottom catchlight.

I've added the light diagrams and photo of the set up below. In the studio, we can move the light. With the window, we move the subject and add light with modifiers like reflectors.

All photos taken with a Nikon D200, Sigma 50-150 f/2.8 lens @ about 75mm. Images taken at f/3.5, ISO 200, 1/30th second, tripod mounted
