Newsletter June 2008

On Wednesday, June 18, 2008 we will hold our monthly meeting in a different location! We are going to meet at Kershaw Park on Canandaigua Lake to refine our outdoor lighting, posing and composition. We will start at the Gazebo for a short business meeting at 2:00PM and then, about 2:30, we'll break into groups to take some portraits. There will be models and hopefully enough for each group. If there are some who would like to do landscapes or nature photos, we could make up a group for that. It was also requested that you bring along any props or special gear you may use in your location work to show everyone.

We will have dinner following our excursion in the park.

Message from the Editor

I knew our new PPSNY president, Kelvin Ringold, would be on the move with some great ideas, but it appears he has been shot out of a canon. (not Canon) If you haven't had a chance to visit the new state website, click on the link below at www.ppsnys.com.

The speaker line up for this years conference looks awesome, including several of my favorites with Kevin Kubota, Rod Evans and David Jay. Sign up for the conference early see we can show our trade show vendors that we will have a good turn out to fill the trade show.

On a personal note, I have been playing with video light lately and the effects have been pretty cool. I will be adding my experience with it to my new speaking program.

Treasurer's Report: Accepted as read by Bonnie.

Membership: New dues structure: State is now $165.00, F L Section dues are $35.00 = $200.00 total dues. Kevin said he would get a refund check to new member Paul Freeman's $35.00 section dues. Craig mentioned that Section Chairs must be PPA members. In Kelvin's program he said we must make it easier for people to Join PPSNYS, and offered some ideas such as blogs and improved internet presence.

2009 TEP was discussed: Committee: Herb, Honey and Kevin and Dan. Print Committee: Mark Craig and Neil. It was agreed that the Batavia location was a good location to draw from Buffalo and Western New York. Herb said "talent should come from our own State in order to save transportation costs and other fees.

Workshop: Scholarships were discussed. It was mentioned that interest accrued should be utilized for either more one hundred dollar scholarships or perhaps full scholarships if interest permits. Kevin Carlson felt the money would be better spent in $100.00 scholarships equitably spread across our membership. Kevin emphasized that everyone in the Finger Lakes can be eligible and that should be better advertised. Honey volunteered to corroborate with Linda on a letter to members notifying members of Workshop scholarships.

Council Meeting: Vince reported on Council and remarked that council has a positive tone, with a new ppsnys website, and an early start to the 2009 convention advertising. Licensing of Photographers: was discussed. To paraphrase Paul Bernstein, "good standards = good photography", "no standards = just a cash cow".
