Message from the Editor

I just returned from a wedding down in Naples, Florida and got to spend four days with the families of the bride and groom. I can't stress enough the importance of building quality relationships with our clients. The photos and professionalism should be top notch, which is a given, but the friendships that we develop with our clients goes so much further than just the photos. We want to inspire and touch their hearts both artistically and personally. How many times have you heard, whether it be positive or negative about the photos, that they don't remember the name of their photographer? I don't want to be a forgotten wedding detail so it is my goal to build life long friendships. This weekend in Naples was just that, and more. I came away with family.

May 2009 Program:

This month's program will be given by Pat Luke, GRPP member from Rochester, NY...

MacGyver: Getting Big Budget Results from Low Budget Equipment

Using small flashes, lighting modifiers and equipment of his own design, Pat will show you how to get big-time results whether you're shooting in your living room, the Board Room, or a studio.

The lighting techniques and equipment will help you whether you're photographing your neighbor's kids for free or a $5,000 wedding. Pat Luke of Luke Photography has become known as "MacGyver" among his peers, as he has become the master at creating inexpensive solutions to his lighting needs! Why buy a "Doug Box" soft box when you can make your own? Why buy expensive snoots and honeycombs for your lights or flashes, when you can make a complete set for $5 that fits YOUR gear? Pat will demonstrate some of his favorite tools that he made himself to solve little problems in the studio...using the small hot shoe strobes with umbrellas, soft boxes and snoots of his own design. How to get big studio results with small strobes/flashes... And his newest brain child... the "ghetto" ring light! Why buy one? Make it instead! These effective and classic lighting techniques can be applied in any studio or in the field!

Comments:
  • "Wow, we had an amazing turn out last night! Pat was AWESOME! Everyone was raving!"
  • "The meeting was AWESOME!! BEST turnout we've seen in a long long time. Lots of new faces, lots of others who never show. It was great! Pat was, of course, awesome. Very funny and very informative. A big hit!"
  • Great mix of practical info and comic relief...kept the audience interested and intrigued. I envy his "out of the box" thought process.
Here is a short bio:

Pat has been a professional photographer for 24 years, all in a part-time capacity. For 20 years, he primarily photographed weddings, and for the last 4 years has concentrated mostly on portraits (children, families and H.S. Seniors). He has also worked for Kodak and Fujifilm, testing professional digital cameras and software.

He was often dissatisfied with commercially-available equipment. Being an avid woodworker with an engineer's mind, he often made his own equipment, which worked as well or better than anything available in the retail market. After sharing his inventions among his peers, he was given the name "MacGyver". Much of his work in the last couple of years has involved the use of his own inventions and inexpensive hot shoe flashes. He figures he has saved thousands of dollars over the course of the last several years by creating his own equipment.
