Message from the Editor

I was flying from Las Vegas to Florida the other morning after attending the WPPI Conference. It was the Red Eye flight, getting into Ft. Lauderdale at 7:00 a.m. As the plane cleared the Texas coast, dawn began to break. The sun cleared the horizon half way across the Gulf Coast, illuminating New Orleans below. It was enlightening to me, having seen the devastation on TV, to actually see it down below under the light of a new day. It was a perfect metaphor for rebirth and a new beginning. That metaphor brings me to my point. Having just attended the PPSNY State Conference and WPPI, my mind is exploding with new ideas. It is now time to create my own rebirth of inspiration. We all have taken the time to attend conferences and workshops like this. Now we must act on what we have learned and grow. It's all to easy to get caught up in the day to day business and let all that inspiration get caught on the next breeze and disappear. Grasp it tight. Implement new ideas. As Marcus Bell so passionately stated at WPPI, "Shoot from the heart."

Message from the Section Chairperson

What a nice convention! Fingerlakes can be proud of its representation this year. We dress up nice as evident in our group photo.

I have included a few here and will bring more to the meeting to share. I hope to see even more members next year. Next years theme is Star Trek (see Readers Digets article), and word has it that it may be in Niagara Falls.

Congratulations to award winners for both prints and service.
Our own Linda Hutchings received two nice awards.

Blue ribbons were plentiful for our members. I do not have a complete list of winners, but we will announce them at this months meeting. Don't miss this months meeting, our featured speaker, Nancy Williams will cover the topic of High School Seniors. She has an extensive background, and has been a speaker at SPI (Senior Photographers international). Membership has its privileges. Coming to the monthly meeting and learning is one of the most important.

See you on the 19th!

Kevin

Readers Digest Article:
Who Knew?

One of the humorous fillers, "It's Academic," says that Georgetown University lists "Philosophy and Star Trek" as a course offering. I teach a Star Trek class at a college-prep high school.

Star Trek episodes have examined Plato, Homer, Descartes, man's relationship to God, poverty, drug abuse, racism and the treatment of war veterans. Several episodes have been based on Shakespearean plays. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., noted that Star Trek provided the proper example of racial equality he wished American would emulate. Sometimes pop culture can provide academic depth.

        The Formal Portrait

I'll admit I'm know for my natural light portraits. It’s been a hallmark of my studio for many years, and I love doing them. But I live in New Hampshire (State Motto: ‘Live, Free or Die’ is often morphed into ‘Live, Freeze, and Die!’) and I don't get a lot of calls for outdoor work in February. Come to think of it, after the foliage season, my outdoor portraits are out of commission until May (it snowed here yesterday). To my non-mathematical mind, that’s half the year I'm out of business if that’s all I do. ...more

“Who Does This Judge Think he is Anyway?”

A competition junkie’s lament, by Pat Michaud

What follows are the rantings of a Madman...oops, it's Pat Michaud from Maine!  Pat is an excellent photographer and Past President of Maine PPA.  Seriously, this letter, originally published in the PPANE newsletter, really caught my attention and I wrote a response to it also in the PPANE (Pro Photog of N.E.) newsletter.  (You'll see that next month!)  I've always admired Pat's photography and writing skills, read below and you'll see why!

I can't speak for anyone else on this matter but I know I've mumbled this particular phrase to myself, sitting in the stifled darkness of a competition crowd, on more than a few occasions.

Standing in front of one of my prints as it sits on the print rack, accompanied by other prints decorated with the dreaded ‘less than (80) score’, I've questioned many a judge’s ability to expertly see the immense creativity and artistry that my print obviously exudes ...more
