Welcome to the new Finger Lakes PPSNY Newsletter. The final vote is in for the domain name for our new website. The winner is flppsny.com. There were 5 votes for flppsny.com, 2 for fingerlakesppsny.com and 1 for fingerlakesphotogs.com. The website will be up and running with the new domain this week. Thanks to everyone for their input and a big thank you to Ellen Chesler of Lake Effects Web Design for her time and effort in establishing this website. Ellen will be attending the state conference with me to learn more about the photography industry and to become a member of our organization.

Next month's newsletter should chock full of stories and photos from the conference. Feel free to submit any tidbits you would like to see in the newsletter to Steve@Cheslerphoto.com

Message from the Section Chairperson

Data Protection.

What would happen if someone broke into your studio and took your computer, you had a fire, hard drive crash or severe electrical storm. How protected are you? We have life and heath insurance (and pay big bucks for these) to replace or fix things, but would you be able to reproduce the last session you did? The last months financial records? Don't wait to find out how important this data is!

Many options are available, and should be explored and implemented so that the unthinkable will not be devastating. These need not be expensive procedures, but may require diligence to keep up to date. A simple tape back up kept off site is a simple solution. Off site internet back up is simpler (unattended) but may be more expensive. In the final analysis you need to pick a comfort level that suits your business and that works for you! But you are playing with fire if you do nothing, and we know what can happen then.

If you have a solution that works for you, I will be asking "For the good of the order" at next months meeting so others can benefit.

Meeting called to order at 2:10 by Kevin Carlson, Chairman.

Attendance: Dan Runfola, Bonnie Saunders, Ben Chappell, Brody Wheeler, Steve Chesler, Daryn Backal, Roger Koss, Neil Sjoblom, Bruce Silvers, Charlie Fischer, Hank Yasses, John David, Linda Hutchings, Mark Griffin, Honey, Monroe, Lois Miller, Ameka Cooper, Donna M. Wood, Steve Schwartz, Vince Aiosa, Lyn, Kevin Carlson, Erin Schuster, Dewey Neild, Roger Smith, Evita, Russ Graham.

Thanks to those who support our meeting place by staying for dinner: Vince and Lynn, Steve, Steve, Roger, Lois, Ameka, Kevin, Honey, Hank, Craig and Linda, Neil, and Russ. Those who stayed for dinner got an unexpected surprise -- Russ once again paid for everything! Thanks Russ.

Secretary's Report: January Minutes were approved on a motion by Craig, second by Linda. Kevin read a thank you note from Judy Buck for the "section collection". She said it was unexpected but much appreciated.

Treasurer's Report: Approved as read by Bonnie on a motion by Hank, second by second by Vince.

Convention: Linda faxed a list of all Finger Lakes members attending the convention to the Nevele Grand Hotel so that our section can get a block of rooms close together.

Online Newsletter: There was much discussion regarding launching our own section web site. Craig asked Steve Chesler what his sister Ellen would charge to create and host the web site. Steve made a phone call and answered a one time $300.00 creation fee and $40.00 per month hosting fee for as much web space as we would need. Kevin said that a section web site could serve as a recruiting tool to attract new members. Hank suggested that the section buy an ad in Life in the Finger Lakes magazine and link it to the section web site.

Motion by Lois, second by Charlie Fischer to raise Finger Lakes section dues by up to ten dollars in 2007 to help cover the added quarterly charges for web site. Approved.

Possible domain names for the site were discussed such as: www.Fingerlakesphotographers.com. Steve said he would check on availability of certian domain names.

Workshop: Linda mentioned that the state matches Blair - Rodabaugh scholarships 1 for 1. It was decided that the section purchase one $100.00 scholarship to be matched by the state.

Old Business

New Business: Bonnie spoke of a conversation she had with a representative of Genesee Country Museum whom expressed a need for photographs of the museum. Bonnie suggested the possibility of holding the annual section picnic at the museum, and combining it with a photo session for the museum. She billed this as an opportunity to create competition photographs for members. Motion by Bonnie, second by Craig to contact the museum and schedule a picnic/photo shoot at the museum on August 16, 2006.

For the Good of the Order: Craig reported on PPA Convention - a record 7,000 attendees. As for the trade show? He said "he couldn't find anything that he couldn't find".

Respectfully submitted
Neil Sjoblom, Secretary

Jay Goldsmith

This issue's guest photographer is Jay Goldsmith from Portsmouth NH. Jay is a very talented and artistic photographer and this time he chose to include some of his artistic images.  In the future, I'll ask Jay to include some of his natural light portraiture, it's absolutely stunning.

I've been photographing for almost as long as Steve Bedell and occasionally find myself in a rut. My professional work is mostly children outdoors. I work slowly and deliberately, on a tripod, with a big camera, about an hour before sunset. This combination has evolved over the years and I like to think the workflow is the result of rigorous and objective analysis (i.e.. a lot of dumb mistakes). Still, Like Mr. Smallweed in Dicken's Bleak House, I feel the need to get shaken up every once in a while. Here's one way...  (more)
