Message from the Editor

I just returned from Imaging USA in Tampa and once again, my mind is spinning with new ideas to implement. I can't stress enough that if you're not taking advantage of the conferences and seminars available to us as professionals, you're really missing out on an amazing opportunity to learn, be inspired and make new friends. It was nice to see several Finger Lakes members in Tampa, as well as other members of PPSNY.

Our state conference is just around the corner and we're back in Westchester at the Rye Town Hilton, which is a great venue. But before I get ahead of myself, we need to focus on our upcoming TEP. Here are the details:

Shooting In RAW

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL

Now that I have that out of my system, let's talk photography.

So are you shooting in RAW yet? I started about six months ago and WOW I love it. If you start out using custom white balance and expose properly, in RAW your job of processing the image or images is made much easier, as it contains all the information captured with no compression, if you do happen to miss on exposure you can normally do a dissent job fixing it. With JPG only, because of the potentially destructive compression applied, the quality is not always there. Many cameras these days have the ability to expose a shot in High JPG and RAW at the same time. Many professionals are using this feature, as they say "to save time processing" the RAW files. It stands to reason, if you can use a properly exposed High JPG file with a good Histogram go for it. The draw back to this is you had better have 3-4 GB memory storage, because using High JPG and RAW takes up a ton of space, ie: with a 516 MB card in my camera, an Olympus E-1, I can get 124 RAW images, in JPG and RAW, I get less than 25 images, quite a difference, isn't it. The information listed here is intended to start you thought process on exposing in RAW and/or in both High JPG and RAW. There is a virtual universe of computing on this topic. In Goggle along there are 10 pages with 10 different topics per page alone.

For a better understanding or additional reading information on RAW vs. JPG, go to www.jmg-galleries.com

Dues for our Finger Lakes Section of PPSNYS increased by $10 to a total of $35 for the 2008 year. The state was not informed of this change and only charged us the usual $25 for section dues for 2008.

We are asking members to add the $10 for our section for the 2008 year to help cover the cost of our website.

Please remit $10 additional dues directly to:
