Message from the Editor
Happy New Year!!!!
With the Christmas rush over I have a moment to breath and reflect on the past year. 2006 has been amazing with a flood of new business, new ideas and new friends.
A new year is now upon us and I'm looking forward to embracing the challenges and experiences that this next year will bring. I'm not going into it blind folded though. I have clear cut goals that I want to accomplish this year in my business, as a writer and speaker, and in my personal life. This industry changes so fast that it's important to have goals to keep things in focus. (Ha ha, focus, get it? I didn't mean that.) Having goals is vital, however it is also important to have flexibility. With as fast as this industry changes, your goals in the beginning of he year my be outdated by July.
One of my goals this year is to keep up with my Blog. I just started it a month ago, so it's still new to me. For those of you who don't know what a Blog is, it's short for a Web Log. It's basically a journal that you keep online that people can read and post comments on. It can be a powerful marketing tool if used correctly. Here is the link to my Blog page and if you already have one, share it on the FLPPSNY Forum:

The Print Judging or Exhibition at PPSNYS is an affiliated print judging. This means that any image receiving an 80 or above with receive a Seal of Approval. The image then must be submitted to the next PPA Judging. Once there the image will receive a merit. This merit is very important because it is an exhibition merit. To receive a Master of Photography Degree from PPA you are required to accumulate 13 exhibition merits along with 12 achievement merits.
When picking out the image you would like to enter into competition you should know that there are many items a juror looks at when rendering there score.
What choosing an image, the most important thing to remember, when reviewing the information below, is that the elements are listed in accordance to their importance.
1. Impact: What you see first - what has the most impact, what creates you first impression - it could be a strong feeling of power, what commands you to look - what holds your eye?, and the impact could be any of the elements list below.

Creativity: Using your imagination, being very original or a fresh approach on a subject matter, creative cropping, creative use of subject matter, content could be very abstract, invention, design, feeling and imagination lifts the photograph into the realm of art. 8. Lighting: A good statement of light, good portrait lighting, dynamic lighting, pattern of light can add to the enhancement. Strong mood can be created by the lighting, lighting is the art of reproducing the characteristics of the subjects or objects.

4. Composition: Good placement of subject matter, a very successful arrangement, harmonious proportions, using dynamic symmetry to place most important objects, good rhythm is created by repetition, whether it's color, spaces, moods, or division of a the photograph. 10. Print Quality: Good strong contrast, using the middle tones, good color balance, expressions and artistic lighting, the simplest statements are the strongest, good angle on the building, backgrounds in key to the subject matter.

7. Center of Interest: Dominance of objects or subject matter, a group of subject and arrangement of objects so one center of interest prevails, subject matter holds the eye with no distractions, moody or misty, strength and definition gives the center of interest; secondary points are very important to the photograph, but you must always be able to come back to the center of interest.
